General rental information

Important documents

The lessee and the driver must present a valid driver's license and an identity card or passport while receiving delivery of the vehicle.

To verify the validity of a driving licenses, the original driving license must be presented.

Photocopies, digital licenses, Learner's Permits, and driver's licenses with driving restrictions will not be accepted.

Driver's license printed with non Roman Alphabet (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Cyrillic etc) must be complemented by an international driver's licence. For driver's licenses from countries not part of the international driver's license treaty an official translation is required.

Sixt supports Chinese customers with the necessary translations via Sixt WeChat Account or via following link: Link . This or any other kind of valid translation of the driving license can only be accepted if accompanied by the original driving license.

Driver's licenses from non-EU countries (except Switzerland) are accepted if: a) no visa has been entered in the passport. b) the customer has a visa in his passport and at the time of hire has not been in Europe for longer than 6 months. If he has been in Europe for longer than 6 months, he must present a driver's license from an EU country.

Age restrictions

Certain regulations apply related to minimum age and possession of driver's license which can be found during the booking process depending on the booked vehicle. Basically, the minimum age for every driver is 19 years (having held the driver's license for at least 1 year). A deviation from the minimum age is possible depending on the vehicle.

A young driver surcharge applies for drivers under 25 years.

Tariff information

General

Sixt accepts credit and debit cards as well as digital wallets by Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Diners Club, Discover, JCB and credit cards by China Union Pay. PayPal is accepted for prepaid bookings at selected locations. The use of PayPal and the PayPal website is subject to the applicable PayPal terms and conditions. A credit or debit card must be presented on pick-up of the vehicle to make a security deposit. The renter must be the PayPal account holder. Apple Digital wallet is accepted for Prepaid bookings, and Digital checkout at selected locations. Debit cards or prepaid cards cannot be used for payments via Apple Pay. The use of Apple Pay is subject to the applicable Apple terms and conditions. At pick up of the vehicle customers must either present a credit or debit card or use Apple Pay (if available) at the counter to make a security deposit. Prepaid cards cannot be accepted as a method of payment. Sixt only accepts Maestro/V PAY cards for the hiring of vans and trucks, as well as vehicles up to Group F*** (excluding Special Cars and Sports & Luxury Cars). Payment with a Maestro/V PAY card is not permitted for long-term hire. The method of payment must be issued in the name of a renter, presented upon collection of the vehicle, and be valid for at least another 30 days from this point in time. Sixt reserves the right to only accept credit card payments in combination with the PIN.

For business customers with which Sixt has entered into a framework contract, Sixt also accepts virtual payment methods, such as AirPlus and Amex BTA/iBTA. Requirements for the above are hereby (i) the existence of a valid framework contract, (ii) a cost absorption declaration for future rental under the terms of this framework contract, and (iii) a reservation with a customer number related to the framework contract.

Sixt CarExpress Servicecard (Advantage Circle) is only accepted in combination with a valid means of payment.

Cash payments are not accepted.

As security, the means of payment is debited with a deposit amount (rental amount + CHF 300).

Prepaid tariff - Best price

When booking at a prepaid rate, the payment will be charged along with the total rental price (incl. booked extras and charges) prior to the rental. The driver and mode of payment shall be finalised at the time of reservation and cannot be changed. A refund shall not be issued for non-collection, vehicle being collected late or returned early.

The booking may be changed up to one hour before the scheduled beginning of the rental period. There will be a Booking Modification Fee of CHF 30.00 plus any difference between the original rate and the rate applicable to the adjusted rental period. A change from a prepaid rate to a non-prepaid rate is not possible.

A booking can be cancelled before the start of the rental. In the event of a cancellation, a cancellation fee will be charged to the rental advance payment already made. Cancellation fees will in no case exceed the total amount paid in advance. Cancellations prior to the scheduled start of the rental period will incur a cancellation fee of CHF 99. Any remaining prepaid amount in excess of CHF 99 will be refunded.

Cancellations or changes made within 24 hours of booking can be completed free of charge, provided the scheduled pick-up time is more than 48 hours away.

In the event that the booked vehicle is not collected or not collected at the agreed time, the rental charge already paid shall be withheld in full.

Protection conditions

Third party insurance

The lessee and any authorised driver is insured under the motor vehicle liability insurance. This liability insurance covers injury or damage to third parties up to a maximum sum insured to the amount of CHF 100 million and is limited to Europe.

Excluded from the insurance is the use of the vehicle for the transport of dangerous goods. All protection as part of the rental contract will become void, in particular, if an unauthorized driver has used the vehicle or if the driver of the vehicle does not possess the required driver's licence at the time of the event giving rise to claim.

Loss damage waiver (incl. theft protection)

Loss damage waiver (incl. theft protection) removes the drivers responsibility to a part of the vehicle in case of damage or theft.

If loss damage waiver (incl. theft protection) is accepted, the customer is entitled, depending on the vehicle, to a deductible of CHF 2.500,00. In addition, a reduction of the deductible is possible.

In the event of willful or grossly negligent damage caused, the claim on the agreed fully comprehensive cover (incl. theft cover) shall lapse. You can find more information about these and other reasons for the lapse of the fully comprehensive cover under letter I. in our general rental conditions.

If no fully comprehensive cover (incl. theft cover) has been arranged or if this is not applicable in accordance with our valid general rental conditions (letter 15.), the leaser is responsible for all damage to the car not proven to be caused by a third party and is liable up to the full value of the vehicle.

Interior Protection

By selecting interior protection, liability can be reduced to a deductible of CHF 150 if the vehicle interior is soiled or damaged.

Personal accident proctection

By selecting personal accident protection coverage can also be extended to cover the consequences of an accident.

By selecting personal accident protection the limit of liability is: CHF 40,000.00 for invalidity, CHF 20,000.00 for decease, and an unlimited amount for medical costs (up to a maximum of 5 years).

Tire and glass coverage

The tire and glass coverage provides protection for damages on tires, windscreen, side windows and the rear window with a deductible of CHF 0.00.

If no glass and tyre cover has been arranged, the leaser shall be liable for up to the full amount of the damage.

Roadside protection

The mobility service is an extended breakdown cover during the rental and protects against high service fees and repair costs in the following self-caused events, within national territory and on authorised travel abroad: key locked inside the vehicle, loss of keys, getting stuck, jump start in the event of an empty battery and breakdown due to lack of fuel or electricity.

All services may only be ordered by a direct claim with Sixt 24-hour Roadside Assistance. They shall also determine the type and extent of service required to ensure the renter stays mobile. If any damage to the rental vehicle occurs which is not covered by Sixt within the scope of the Roadside Protection, the renter is liable for such damage.

Cross border rentals and territorial restrictions

Territorial restrictions

The vehicle selection can restrict travel to certain countries. For a description of these restrictions on admission, the countries are divided into four zones.

Zone I: Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain and Vatican

Zone II: Croatia, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia

Zone III: Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania

Zone IV: All countries that are not in zone I, II or III.

Car groups in the Premium (P***), Premium Elite (U***) and Luxury (L***) categories, Special Cars up to and including Premium Elite (**S*) as well as all vans and trucks may only enter countries in zones I and II.

Vehicles of all other groups may enter in zones I, II and III.

Entry into any country in zone IV is not permitted with any Sixt vehicle.

Leaving the European continent is not permitted. This includes the Spanish exclaves of Ceuta & Melilla. The renter undertakes to comply with all official entry, exit and access authorisations.

The local transport of the vehicle by ferry and by motorail is permitted in compliance with the above-mentioned entry restrictions. Damage to the vehicle during the crossing will be covered according to the protection booked in the rental contract.

In case of offence against cross border and territorial restrictions all protections lose their validity. Only the protection from the liability insurance in accordance with the conditions of the international insurance card remains valid.

Charges when traveling abroad

For travels into Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finnland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Great Britian, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Sweden, Spain and Vatican a charge applies. In case of a one-way rental to one of the above-mentioned countries, the foreign use charge applies in addition to the one-way fee.

Extras

One-way rentals

For one-way rentals, the contractually agreed one-way fee will apply.

In the case of unannounced and unauthorised one-way rentals, we reserve the right to charge an additional fee.

If your plans change during your hire period, let us know by telephone on +41 (0)848 884 444 or in person at any of our numerous stations, and our employees will amend your rental contract. By doing this, we can adapt to your changed plans.

International one-way rentals are not allowed.

Navigation system

Navigation systems and Android Auto / Apple Car Play are guaranteed to be available when booking.

Additional driver

A charge is levied for the additional driver, whose details are noted in the lease only if the additional driver presents a valid driver's license.

Baby and child seats

Baby seats, child seats and booster seats for children up to 12 years (61 to 150 cm) are guaranteed to be available if a booking is made.

Vehicle refueling

If the vehicle has not been returned in a completely refuelled state, and if you have not booked the "Erste Tankfüllung" (Prepaid fuel) or "Fuelling service" extras, Sixt will charge you the fees in accordance with the tariffs applicable upon rental, for the fuelling of the vehicle and for fuel. The respectively valid tariffs are available at the Sixt branches.

Alternatively, you may purchase a tankful of fuel at the time of rental at a price that is competitive with local fuel stations and return the tank empty. No refunds will be given for unused fuel.

"Erste Tankfüllung" (Prepaid fuel): You can purchase the "Prepaid fuel" extra at the comparable fuel station price and thereby return the vehicle without a full fuel tank. In this case, you will not be charged any additional refuelling costs in accordance with the above paragraph. Please note that unused fuel will not be reimbursed.

Fuelling service: Subject to availability at the respective branch, you can book our "Fuelling service" at the specified price and thereby return the vehicle without a full fuel tank. In this case, you will only be charged for the subsequently fuelled litres of fuel at comparable fuel station prices, in addition to the above-mentioned fee.

Relocation accessories

Sack barrows, dolly trolleys and load-securing straps are subject to availability.

Delivery and collection

Deliveries and collections are available at the local rental station subject to a fee.

This service is available on request for an additional commitment fee outside opening times at selected locations.

The renter is obliged to report the vehicle back to SIXT at the end of the rental period.

Surcharge personal address For delivery to or collection from an address that is not an official company location of the customer (e.g. private or hotel address), a surcharge of 10.00 CHF will be levied in addition to the collection/delivery fee. If applicable, the fee is not yet due at the time of reservation, but only at the start of the rental.

Winter equipment

Winter gear such as antifreeze and winter-proof tires will be available subject to a fee.

Other charges and taxes

Out of opening hours

Out of opening hours service is available at selected stations. In this case, an additional charge applies for the provision of the service.

Lump-sum expense fee for the handling of violations of the law (criminal offences, regulatory violations, etc.)

For the processing of traffic and regulatory violations, possession violations and other violations of the law, Sixt charges a lump-sum expense fee in the amount of 45,00 CHF unless the lessee proves that Sixt incurred no or significantly lower expense and/or damage.

Registration fee / Road tax

There will be a road tax, which is included in the rent.

Flexibility during your rental

As a flexible mobility partner, we adapt to your plans subject to availability. Please inform us of any changes to your plans during the rental period by calling +41 (0)848 884 444 or directly at one of our numerous branches. As far as possible for us, we will adjust the rental agreement with the help of our staff. In addition to fees arising from the modification (e.g. extra days / different return location), we charge a handling fee of CHF 5.00 per modification process for changes made to the return date, return time or return location. Alternatively, you have the option to waive the handling fee for rental changes at your SIXT station when picking up the rental car for a service fee of CHF 3.00. If you do not inform us of your intended rental changes, the following service fees will be charged:

Flexi Return Guarantee in the tariff Pay later

If you return your vehicle before the end of the agreed rental period, we will charge the rental price in accordance with the rental agreement. If the vehicle is returned more than two days before the end of the agreed rental period, you will receive a partial discount for the unused rental days.

Flexi Return Guarantee in the tariff Pay now

When booking at a prepaid rate, a refund shall not be issued for returned early. For further information please refer to the section Prepaid Tariff - Pay now.

Flexi Late Return in both tariffs (Pay later & Pay now)

If you return the vehicle later than agreed in the rental agreement, extra days or additional hours may be charged due to the rental extension. If you do not inform us about the rental extension, we will charge an additional service fee of max. CHF 29.90 for the Flexi Return service.

Flexi Return Location in both tariffs (Pay later & Pay now)

If you return the vehicle to a station other than that agreed in the rental contract, the Flexi Return location will incur a service fee of max. CHF 39.99 if we have not been informed of the changes to the rental contract in advance.
